Reader Advice

I love this dress. I saw it on etsy over a month ago and fell in love with it. The only reason I didn't buy it is because it was a little short for me. My knees are not my best feature and wearing something above the knee makes me feel self conscious. So, I emailed to see if the seller would do a custom order for me, only slightly longer. It took a while for her to come back with the answer, sorry no, too busy. AAAAaaaargh. This is the dress that I really wanted for one of the parties we're planning for my significant birthday this year.
Your advice is needed. So many of you are much better sewers than me, but I don't think making this is much of a stretch. The body to me looks just like a tube, gathered slightly with a folded band around the top, probably a hidden zip down the side. The strap I can figure out too and the flowers, well I guess they'll just take practice. Questions I'm looking to be answered more than others, I think I'll try with a dummy go - do I make it out of the same weight of fabric? Also, this looks quite light and sheer to me, but the listing only said cotton - any ideas on what I should use? Any ideas, tips or comments gratefully received.

Firstly, I LOVE this dress & now I want one too!

Secondly, I think you could definitely make it or at the very least, have a shot at it. I would head to spotlight & buy some cheap fabric (the same weight)& have a go.

Looks like basic band with zip down one side & 2 layers of fabric in the dress for modesty!

As you say, the flowers would just take practice & some fiddling to get right.

Can't wait to see your version- beautiful!

I'm with christie. I always do any pattern trials with calico first. 100% cotton and you could see the effect of how it sits, then decide if you want to spend extra on different fabrics. I have some light grey home spun 100% cotton here (25mtrs off it) that I was told would be suitable for my pants but the quality was not what I wanted. I am happy to pop some in the post for you to play with. Just forward your address and I will get it to you in the next couple of days. Good luck with the dress, I'm sure it will look sensational.

Gorgeous dress and I think it will look fabulous on you for your 25th birthday ;)

You know I'm no good with the sewing advice so I'll just stay right out of that one. However I will advise not to change the colour fabric, this steel/grey is just perfect.

Oh, to be turning 21 again! I would seriously just buy the dress and wear it as a top with leggings or a pencil skirt. How lazy am I?!

I think it would look fab with some leggings underneath if you don't fancy showing your knees off.

I think you could definitely make it too... a band ,some gathering..a zip and some free range flowering :-)
theres no complex pattern to it to make it fit to your body..a joy of floaty type dresses...
and i agree its a really nice colour. you can do it :-)

Its just gorgeous. As all the girls have said, get some cheap fabric and have a go. Also have a flick through the pattern books or their websites, and you may find a very similar pattern.

Pleased you are enjoying Body Balance - I always loved that bit at the end.
