44

An early start and a long morning for small legs. We joined thousands of others this morning in the Run for the Kids supporting the Royal Children's Hospital. It was a perfect day for it and despite a few murmurs of dissent, Ella walked all bar about 250m when I gave her a piggy back and Leila walked some of the 4.5km short course.

We're trying to shift the balance of things around here. We're comfortable in our home, our possessions, the things we do and see, but at times we feel the girls can be little dismissive of the good life that they lead. Things like this, participating in a fun run for the pleasure of it and the feel good factor of knowing they're helping others, they should be more common in our life. Things come a little too easily at times, a treat here a treat there, until you get to the point where you think none of it is really appeciated as what is is, extra, special, a treat. So, we trying to par things back, less uncalled for treats, less television, more activity, more doing for others.

Wow - hows that for thoughtful parenting? Good on you. Your kids will benefit from it. Thanks for the inspiration. x

Good on you!! It's so easy to slip into dishing out the treats thick and fast isn't it, therefore rendering them not treats but everyday expectations. Like you I'm pulling back and trying to give them a sense of balance and awareness that not everybody has it so good.

That's a great lesson you're teaching the girls and in turn, they shall pass it on.

Only this week I caught myself thinking about the same topic. How Miss A thinks every time you visit a shop that she needs to buy something. I don't buy her something every time either, it's just the wanting. And it really annoys me.

inspiring and motivational V!

Getting out and about, a bit less tv and a bit more family time and quite a few less treats are some big changes I hope to make at our house too.

Well done! Your lovely kids, by the way, are not the only ones, who takes a lot for granted – mine do too. And it is the parents who has the power to change that. Mine are really spoiled, but we are working on that. Just to let you know, the older they get, the more they actually become aware how lucky they are compared to other children around the world.
